Even with a day of rain, Upper Saddle River Day was a success, especially in raising funds for the Upper Saddle River Volunteer Ambulance Corp (USRVAC). Of note, USR Cares, the USR Women’s Club, and the USR Latinas Club raised and contributed significant funds toward purchasing a new ambulance for the USRVAC.
Put the Brakes on Fatalities Day
October 10, 2024, named “Put the Brakes on Fatalities Day” by the USR Mayor and Council. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that 40,990 people died in traffic accidents in 2023, and they are the major cause of deaths of young people ages 15-34 years old. The New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety estimates that there were 585 traffic fatalities in 2023. Pedestrian-related accidents accounted for 30% of New Jersey’s traffic deaths. Motorcyclists and pedestrians face increased risks in the State of New Jersey.
Boro Official’s Report
The police, fire, department of public works, construction code official, and the municipal court submitted monthly reports to the boro clerk. USRFD Senior Lieutenant John Hart was named firefighter of the month. Senior Lieutenant Hart manages the junior firefighters’ program and is a highly active member of the fire department. Bills were authorized for $3,916,830.81 payment, of which 86% were for the schools.
Ordinance 09-24 Introduced for the Issuance of $500,000 in Bonds for Equipment Purchases
Equipment purchases through a bond issue were introduced including for communication, signal systems, technology, building improvements, and a new automobile and related equipment in the total amount of $500,000 in an ordinance to be voted on at next month’s meeting.
- Acquisition of new police SUV: $60,000 bonds and notes
- Installation of security cameras and access control systems at the USRPD: $132,380 bonds and notes
- Renovation of a cell block at police headquarters: $32,000 bonds and notes
- Acquisition of machinery and equipment including skid decks for trucks at DPW: $10,475 bonds and notes
- Various improvements at Borough Hall: $19,040 bonds and notes
- New IT and computer equipment for USRFD: $3,645 bonds and notes
- Undertaking of an engineering study of the restoration of the riparian zona and wetlands of the west branch of the Saddle River due to Tropical Storm Ida: $113,330 bonds and notes
